How to Clean Carpet Stains

Let’s face it, you’re bound to run into a carpet stain at some point or another. Even a home without kids or pets is prone to spills and smudges. Fortunately, you can restore your carpet with the right technique and the right products, many of which might already be in your pantry or utility closet.

Follow the following steps to clean even the most stubborn stains.

1) Remove Any Excess ASAP

Blot away the excess liquid with a clean, absorbent cloth. Do NOT rub, as rubbing can damage the carpet fibers, spread the liquid/particles and push them deeper into your carpet’s fibers. If it is solid, scrape it off with a spoon or a butter knife.

2) Start with Water & Dish Soap

Dishwashing liquid is amazing during many cleaning situations, including carpet stains. Mix one tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap (such as Dawn) with two cups of cold water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and blot the carpet. Keep applying and blotting until the stain is gone. Once the stain is gone, blot with cold water to soak up the remaining dishwashing liquid.

3) Leave to Dry Overnight

Put some paper towels or dry cloth on the wet spot and allow them to soak up excess liquid overnight. If the stain remains, try a more targeted technique from below.

How to Remove Red Wine Stains From Carpet

One of the go-to cleaning solutions for red wine spills on a carpet is club soda. Saturate the stain with club soda and blot until the stain is completely gone. Remove any extra residue with a damp cloth.

How to Remove Coffee Stains From Carpet

Before you do anything, blot and remove any excess liquid from the carpet. Make a cleaning solution of 1 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1/2 teaspoon dish soap, and blot it into the stain. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes and blot using a clean towel or rag.

How to Remove Pet Urine Stains from Carpet

Pet urine stains are some of the most common carpet stains. Start by cleaning up excess urine. Make a cleaning solution of 2 cups of vinegar, 2 cups of warm water, and 4 tablespoons of baking soda and blot on the stain. This will not only help remove the stain but will also help neutralize the odor. Let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes before removing it with a clean towel or rag.
